Student Edition editor: Tina Deschenie (Navajo/Hopi) is a poet currently finalizing her first collection of poems. She was assisted by the faculty of the tribal colleges and universities, who recruited their students to submit their entries to the annual competition.

ON THE COVER: "Flying Head" is a woodblock print by Steven Chrisjohn (Oneida of New York). When he took an introduction to printmaking class at the Institute of American Indian Arts (Santa Fe, NM), he carved this design based on the motif on a water jar. The water jar was made by the Mound Builders, Eastern Woodland people who lived in the northern Ohio Valley. Chrisjohn has been doing a series of art pieces on the history of his tribal identity. For this piece, he carved the design into a block of wood and printed it as three-dimensional embossed paper. "I have been carving for 40 years, but this school has really broadened my media and my outlook on art." He graduated last spring from IAIA at the age of 48 at the same time as his daughter, Julie Chrisjohn Bush. It was the first time that a father and daughter had graduated together there.
