What an awesome sight—
Twelve eagles in the front room
Messengers for God

The window opens
Unseen trails in talons
The eagles take flight

A humble honor
This mysterious visit
A gift from a dream.

Anna Martineau Merritt, 35, is a member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians. She received her Associate of Arts Degree in Native American Studies at the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College, May 1999. Now a full-time student at the Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire, WI, she is pursuing a GIS (Geographic Information System) Technician degree. She says, “Writing is very important to me. I have self-published three chap books, a combination of short stories and poetry written by my husband and myself, and one book with my father-in-law and some of my writing friends. I have a lot to say but learned several years ago that without letters behind your name, not many will listen. I chose to go back to school to learn about who I am and what my culture is about. I found that I am my culture and have grown with it.”
