At the end of March, the Oklahoma Board of Nursing approved the Comanche Nation College (CNC, Lawton, OK) Practical Nursing Program.

Administrators from the nursing program and CNC appeared before the nursing board for its final decision in what has been a year-long process of seeking approval. Those who attended for CNC included Marsha Tahquechi, program director; Dr. Consuelo Lopez, CNC president; Juanita Pahdopony, dean of academics; and Gene Pekah, dean of student services. Comanche Nation of Oklahoma Chairman Mike Burgess was also present.

The nursing board members asked many questions regarding the conditional status of the program and were satisfied with the progress the program made over the last year. Full approval means that the nursing program can begin the process of admitting students to Cohort 3 in the Fall 2011 semester.

“This is the first approved tribal nursing program in the state of Oklahoma. It is truly an honor,” stated Program Director Marsha Tahquechi.

On April 29, 2011, the two-year tribal college graduated its first class with students Molly Lord, who earned an associate of arts; Lance Hill, an associate of general studies; and Jonathan Poahway, an associate of applied science degree.

The commencement speaker was John T. Plata, J.D. Plata is the sole in-house attorney for the Comanche Nation of Oklahoma and counsel and director for legal affairs.

Other dignitaries in attendance included Master of Ceremony Eddie Mahseet, College Council members Dr. Barbara Hobson and Dr. Lotsee Patterson, CNC President Lopez, and Deans Pahdopony and Pekah.

The CNC graduation ceremony centered on Comanche tradition and culture, and began with the CNC school song written and performed by Kevin Sovo in the Comanche language. Accompanying Sovo were his family members June Sovo, Stacey Sovo, and Gordon Tahquechi.
