White Earth Tribal and Community College will host a Creative Storytelling Intensive (CSI) camp to improve college readiness in reading and writing, utilizing a storytelling model as its framework. CSI camp is aimed at strengthening student educational interests through exploration of individual gifts and talents (Mikagaadeg wendjising) where the college utilizes an experiential learning model to strengthen learner skills. Learners will experience positive reinforcement where their individual achievements could potentially lead to the development of a successful vision and plan for high school success, college access, and degree completion.
The curriculum will expose students to Indigenous storytelling as a traditional way of teaching values which are woven into the fiber of Native culture with the purpose of honoring life. Those connections with life, land, water, and sky have produced narratives containing practical and sacred information for future generations. CSI camp is designed to enhance verbal language skills, improve reading comprehension, develop listening skills, provide communication tools for reflection, and to improve writing and mechanical skills through the Native art of storytelling.
