A devastating fire swept through Red Crow Community College (RCCC) on the Blood Reserve in Cardston, Alberta, early Friday morning. The inferno left students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the entire Blood Reserve without a college, as the entire interior of the college was destroyed.  Only the brick edifice remained standing, a stark reminder of Friday’s blaze. At press time, the cause of the fire was still under investigation.

“It’s going to be difficult news,” stated Billy Wadsworth, a tribal councilman and a member of RCCC’s board of governors. “People are going to be wondering if they’re going to be going to school.”

While the fire creates myriad problems in the short term, fortunately its effects may be minimized in the long term, as RCCC had previously implemented plans to relocate to a new campus later this fall. “I don’t think there will be any major interruptions…classes may be delayed a week or two or maybe not, so everything is under control,” says college vice-president Henry Bigthroat.
