TRIBAL COLLEGE JOURNAL VOLUME 26.2

TCJ’s winning cover illustration by Kevin Red Star from its winter 2014 issue took the Silver Award at the national Association Media and Publishing awards in Washington, DC.

Tribal College Journal was presented with the Silver Award for best magazine cover illustration at the Associated Media and Publishing’s annual Excel Awards Gala in Washington, DC. The contest drew over 1000 entries.

The winning illustration appeared on the cover of TCJ’s winter 2014 issue on workforce development. The cover features the painting entitled Evening Mountain Horses by Kevin Red Star (Crow), an early graduate of the Institute of American Indian Arts. Nakota Designs detailed the cover, adding fonts and preparing it for publication.

The award comes less than one year following TCJ’s 25th anniversary and the redesign of the journal. “TCJ often receives compliments on its covers,” says TCJ publisher Rachael Marchbanks. “We’re thrilled that this cover received national recognition.” Nikki Santos, the federal and tribal relations associate at AIHEC, received the award on behalf of TCJ.
