Dine Be’ Iiná Inc. and Diné College are partnering to host the 19th Annual Sheep is Life Celebration. The weeklong event will be filled with workshops and lectures focused on the Navajo sheep culture and spirituality. Sheep Is Life will be held June 15-20, 2015 at the Diné College campus in Tsaile, Arizona.
Sheep is Life is a gathering for all weavers, artists, and for those who love sheep, wool, and the diverse cultures that have maintained these lifeways for thousands of years. Sheep is Life also focuses on the role of raising awareness of the role that the Navajo-Churro sheep have played in the evolution of Navajo weaving, as well as the special qualities of Navajo-Churro wool, meat, and survival rates. Everyone is welcome. Bring tools, spindles, sheep, wool, art, and your creativity to share!
There will also be a series of pre-celebration fiber arts workshops from June 15-19 that include weaving, twill weaving, hand spinning, carding, wool dyeing, vest felting, sash belt making, horse cinch weaving, lead rope braiding, Kumihimo braiding, and how to perform advance weaving techniques. Free public events will be held June 19-20, which include sheep and wool shows, a variety of speakers, workshops, vendors, tasting events, youth activities, seminars, sheep to loom demonstrations, and a Navajo fiber show/store. Registration information is available at www.navajolifeway.org.
