Leech Lake Tribal College (LLTC) in Cass Lake, Minnesota has joined an array of nine institutions, organizations, and companies in Partnership for a Healthier America’s (PHA) fight against childhood obesity. LLTC officials travelled to Washington, D.C. where they took part in PHA’s 2015 Building a Healthier Future Summit.

In joining the effort, LLTC will implement PHA’s Healthier Campus Initiative, which sees college as a time when students develop new habits and hence the ideal time for intervention to encourage healthy habits. “By creating healthier food and physical activity environments today, campuses and universities can encourage healthier habits that will carry over into tomorrow,” PHA states. Accordingly LLTC, American University, Bucknell University, Loyola Marymount University, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Saint Louis University have committed to improve healthier habits on their respective campuses. They will adopt PHA guidelines on food and nutrition, as well as physical fitness programming.

At the summit First Lady Michelle Obama gave her support for their efforts, while PHA CEO, Lawrence Soler, emphasized the importance of the endeavor: “The leaders, companies, universities, and colleges that made a commitment today are taking a stance against childhood obesity at a moment in time when we must step forward and not back.”
