Will Strongheart of LCOOCC voted AIHEC slam poet of the year

SLAMMIN IT DOWN. The AIHEC slam poet of the year, Will Strongheart of Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College.

Students from tribal colleges and universities (TCUs) throughout North America gathered Saturday night at the Montana Convention Center in Billings for the inaugural American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) student congress poetry slam. Kicking off the AIHEC student conference, 29 students participated in the slam, with Will Strongheart of Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College (LCOOCC, Hayward, WI) taking top honors as slam poet of the year.

A panel of five judges randomly chosen from the audience scored the contestants as they cycled through four rounds.  In the final, the judges gave the nod to Strongheart; Vicki Alberts of Fort Berthold Community College (FBCC, New Town, ND) took second place. Both contestants received a monetary award from Tribal College Journal and will be recognized at the AIHEC student conference awards banquet Tuesday night.  The slam will be posted in its entirety on TCJstudent.org.
