TCUs Glean $4.3 million In USDA Rural Grants

In September 2010, U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that 22 tribal colleges in nine states have been awarded $4.3 million in grants through the USDA Rural Development Tribal College Initiative Grant program. The program provides land grant institutions with funds for outreach and education services to help meet the needs of Native American communities.

The following colleges were chosen: Tohono O’odham Community College (Sells, AZ, $196,600 to equip four classrooms with the latest in technological equipment and furniture); Bay Mills Community College (Brimley, MI, $196,500 for improvements on all three campus sites); Leech Lake Tribal College (Cass Lake, MN, $196,400 to upgrade equipment); White Earth Tribal and Community College (Mahnomen, MN, $196,600 to help purchase an existing building and equipment); Blackfeet Community College (Browning, MT, $196,400 to purchase equipment for the new “Green” Math/Science Building); Little Big Horn College (Crow Agency, MT, $196,400 toward equipment for the health and wellness facility); Stone Child College (Box Elder, MT, $196,400 for equipment for the Little Bear Health Enhancement Center, Physical Fitness Certificate Program, Athletic Program, Allied Health Program, and Nursing Program); Fort Belknap College (Harlem, MT, $196,400 for two immersion classrooms in the cultural center); Salish Kootenai College (Pablo, MT, $196,400 for construction of a new Extension Education Complex Headquarters); Fort Peck Community College (Poplar, MT, $196,400 for energy efficient renovations and rehabilitation of facilities); Chief Dull Knife College (Lame Deer, MT, $196,400 for equipment, building renovations, and vehicles); Nebraska Indian Community College (Macy, NE, $196,400 to provide a paved access road and campus parking lot); Little Priest Tribal College (Winnebago, NE, $196,400 to enhance education facilities); Cankdeska Cikana Community College (Fort Totten, ND, $196,500 to construct hallways connecting the entire campus); United Tribes Technical College (Bismarck, ND, $196,400 to complete a parking lot); Turtle Mountain Community College (Belcourt, ND, $196,500 for parking lot expansion); Sitting Bull College (Fort Yates, ND, $196,500 to complete on-campus road lighting and paving); Sisseton Wahpeton College (Sisseton, SD, $196,500 to expand the library); Oglala Lakota College (Kyle, SD, $196,400 for renovations to the college center); Sinte Gleska University (Mission, SD, $196,400 for classroom construction); Northwest Indian College (Bellingham, WA, $196,500 to begin Phase III of building on the campus); and College of Menominee Nation (Keshena, WI, $196,600 for parking lot expansion and an emergency generator).
