Wounded Knee Remembered at Standing RockAug 15th, 1989 | By tcj | Category: 1-2: Tribal Economic Development, Tribal College News
Standing Rock College will sponsor the third annual Sitting Bull Run and Ride on December 18-27.
Started in 1987, the run is part of an effort to focus attention on the role played by the Hunkpapa Lakota-the people of the Standing Rock Reservation-in the Wounded Knee Massacre. Many of those killed at Wounded Knee were Hunkpapas from the reservation, a fact not often recognized in history texts, according to college staff.
In the 1989 event, runners will relay 40 miles from Ft. Yates, North Dakota to the Sitting Bull homesite. Riders will travel south, taking a path followed by the Hunkpapas a century ago as they fled their reservation.
The ride will be the final staging event for the 1990 centennial year of Sitting Bull’s death and the massacre and is part of an international commemoration.
