Sherry Dupuis has won the first Uniglobe Let’s Travel entrepreneurial scholarship. She received $850 to continue her business studies at Salish Kootenai College in northern Montana. Funding for the annual scholarship came from the travel agency owned and operated by Larry Pitts, who offered 10 percent of his commission base on all travel booked by Salish Kootenai College (under certain guidelines).

When he announced the scholarship in December 1995, Pitts said, “This is an opportunity for us to give back to the college.” Pitts is a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. He hopes the program will help reduce people’s dependence on the tribal government for jobs and financial assistance. Encouraging the development of new businesses will benefit the local economy and keep Indian people from leaving the reservation in search of employment, he said.

His long range plans include setting up similar programs at all the tribal colleges and then at other colleges that express an interest.
