Students from Oglala Lakota College won numerous awards at the 1998 17th Annual American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) Conference last April at Bismarck, N.D. Trina Lone Hill was elected president of the AIHEC Student Congress, and Melanie Two Eagles was elected vice president. They were elected by the students attending the conference from the 31 tribal colleges in AIHEC. Rebecca Three Stars was selected Miss AIHEC and is also OLC’s Student of the Year.
Walking away with first place in the Science Bowl were Pat Jones, Lloydell Mesteth, Jason Kullo Sam, Julie Wendelboe, and Jessie Running Shield. The team’s coach was Stephanie McBride, OLC Learning Center director at Rapid City, S.D. Third place in the Knowledge Bowl went to students Lisa Smoke, George Tall, Benny Rosales, Cedar Lone Hill, and Jennie Flye. The coach was Milton Fineran, counselor at Pejuta Haka College Center in Kyle, S.D. In the Speech Competition, Terry Romero placed second, and Cindy Wheeler placed third in the persuasive category. Charlie Smoke took second place in the informative speech category. OLC speech instructor, Gary Jones, served as their coach.
